7th Java meet up in Amsterdam

Last Friday I visited the regular Java meetup at De Jaren in Amsterdam, organised by Interface21.

I guess some 30 people turned up. It’s great to network with a group of people and find out from Alef what they have been doing since the last meetup.

Lots of people were very enthusiastic about the JavaNight at Capgemini. Good venue, good sphere, good keynote and some presentations that gave some food for thought. Most people were not aware that Capgemini were involved with lots of different Java projects some large, small and innovative.

I had a long discussion with Peter Hilton, from Lunatech, about the type of work they took on. Sounded very interesting – take new ideas – make some software – go to market.

It’s great to be able to cycle home through Amsterdam. Of course I had had too many beers but hell it was a good evening.

Apple MacBook Pro or is it the Hard disk quality sucks!

After hearing all my colleauges have motherboard, battery and hard disk problems with their Apple MBP’s, it finally happened to me!

Yes after 5 months of use the internal Hitachi 160Gb SATA hard disk in my MBP died. When it booted up I got a loud ticking noise from the disk and on the screen a folder displayed with a flashing question mark. I noticed before it crashed that the computer was extremelly warm – perhaps it overheated – it wasn’t really working that hard at the time.

Anyway I since visited the Apple shop in Amsterdam and they replaced my hard disk without cost. I did however have to wait 4 days as they had no spare parts in stock. The good news was I could still use my MBP booting off my firewire backup disk.

Luckily I back everything up regularly using a fantastic utility called SuperDuper. I really recommend this $29 utility.
